ARI: The only Accurate Up-to-Date Database

So, I, and probably every other alpaca owner with an ARI account, received an email from ARI today about the ARI database being the only true database for alpaca pedigree and progeny data. (The entire email is reprinted below without permission…if I need to remove it, I will do so, but I think it is valid that they want the information seen and I am going to provide it in another place for the ARI.) Now, I am not going to dispute that this should be the only database with pedigree and progeny data. I am wondering what other databases they are referring to that have information like this. I don’t go trolling the Internet for alpaca databases, but I can think of one that they might be talking about in the Ideal Alpaca ( website which has an EPD program that may be in conflict with the ARI up and coming EPD program. I am only speculating about this!! I am a member of ARI and of the Ideal Alpaca community. I realize that for 100% accurate pedigree information, I use ARI. For EPD and other marketing reasons, I use Ideal Alpaca. The ARI EPD program is not nearly as developed as the Ideal Alpaca program. I believe that maybe, in time, their program will be useful. Until then, I am going to be a member of both and I will decide how I will use the information going forward at some date in the future.

If you know of other databases being used for this data, I would love to hear about them so I know what this blast was referring to. Please feel free to leave a comment.

ARI: The Only Accurate
and Up-to-Date Database

Dear ARI Member:

It has recently come to the attention of ARI that some individuals, groups and commercial websites have been collecting data from sources other than ARI and representing this data as accurate and current pedigree and progeny data, when often it is inaccurate.

ARI takes its role in the alpaca industry very seriously. Integrity and accuracy of your data are very important to us, which is why we have taken steps to continually improve our testing methods, processes, and services over the past several years.

Having non-verified pedigree and progeny information available elsewhere is concerning to us. As you can imagine, a lot of time and money has been invested into our system in order to provide a great service to the membership. Other individuals, groups or websites that are collecting pieces of this data create several issues. The fact that alpaca owners and potential alpaca owners may be relying on data that is not accurate and up-to-date could have a negative impact on the entire alpaca industry.

The members set up ARI many years ago to be the organization that tracks the pedigrees of all registered alpacas by utilizing scientific means. Initially that was a rigorous screening process for imported alpacas, then blood typing was utilized. In 1998 ARI began using DNA testing on a 10 marker DNA panel, and in 2005 upgraded its process to utilize a 14 marker DNA panel. ARI has invested many years and a great deal of resources to help ensure that we have the most accurate pedigree and progeny data available to the alpaca industry. ARI’s database encompasses data on more than 150,000 registered alpacas, and our database is searchable by all of our members in order to help them make effective breeding and buying decisions.

We want to assure you that your private personal and alpaca data stored by ARI is secure and that data that is being included in other databases is not being provided to such databases by ARI. We will take all necessary steps to protect your Registry and data to ensure that we are able to continue supporting alpaca value for many years to come.

We urge you to understand ARI’s user agreement and to be cautious when providing your alpaca data to other individuals, groups, or commercial enterprises, as those actions can impact the Registry, the industry, and your own operations if that data is misused, inaccurate, or out of date. We also encourage you to support your Registry by using only us for researching the most up-to-date and accurate information about registered alpacas so that you are able to make effective buying and breeding decisions, rather than relying on data that has been collected from various sources and then entered manually into some other system.
